An artist always likes to talk about their work and I guess I’m no different. You might say that I have a split personality because I like abstracts as well as realistic art. Most of the landscapes that I painted are in a realists’ manner and are of places close to our home located in northern California. We are lucky enough to live where the ancient people once lived. Many of the rocks have deep grinding holes where the women ground their acorns. I like to think I feel their energy when I am out painting. Barns and houses become a part of this landscape, too.
The painting called, “Is It Dusk or Is It Dawn?” developed out of my frustration to what is happening in our world. In the picture you may notice that there are no young men, only old men, women and children. War has taken our young men. Religions seem to be pitted against each other rather that working together to achieve peace. The large figure holding the baby represents Mother Earth. The man on Mother Earth’s shoulder represents evil incarnate. He is hiding under a dove of peace, trying to reach through her minds’ eye. The baby in Mother Earths’ arms is Hope. The baby’s imperfect hand reaches out to all of us. Jessie Jackson once asked the question, “Is it dusk, or is it dawn?” That is really a great question, but I think there is always hope for a new day.
